RON 97 petrol price hike not an issue
4th November, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR: The increase in the price of RON 97 petrol, by five sen to RM2.15 per litre on Tuesday, should not be made an issue because the price was determined by the world oil market, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.
He said the government no longer fix the price nor announce any price increase for the RON 97.
“The opposition parties say we increase the price; no, we did not. The hike was due to the market forces.
“This is different from the prices of RON 95 petrol and diesel which are still being controlled by the government and subject to subsidies,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the MyCoID Gateway initiatives which utilises the Companies Commission of Malaysia’s single reference number, here yesterday.
The people should not be jittery over the increase because 90 per cent of consumers in the country used the RON 95 petrol for their cars, he said, adding that he did not foresee a further increase until end of this year.
The price hike was among the issues being played out at the campaign for the Galas state by-election in Kelantan and Batu Sapi parliamentary by-election in Sabah.
Ismail Sabri said most of petrol stations in rural areas did not provide the RON 97 petrol.
“So why should we worry about things that do not have any impact on us?” he said, stressing that the RON 97 price increase would not push up the prices of essential items.
The price of RON 95 is RM1.85 per litre while diesel is at RM1.75 per litre.
